Yellowcheek

- Water
- Freshwater
- Habitat
- Large waters, river channels and concentrations of baitfish.
- Lure guidance
- Allow fighting room and match tackle to fish size; large swimbait setups do not transfer to small targets.
Behavior and tackle
These local examples use the middle and lower Yangtze climate for monthly activity and do not represent every species in a group.
Yellowcheek Elopichthys bambusa
A large, torpedo-shaped and extremely fast freshwater predator that can exceed 1 m, nicknamed the “bully of fresh water.” It mostly hunts schools of baitfish in the upper water column of big reservoirs and rivers.
Habitat
- Open water in large reservoirs, lakes and rivers
- Points, eddies and inflows where baitfish school
Behavior
- It hunts with high-speed runs and hits hard, with explosive power once hooked.
- It follows schools of baitfish and roams widely.
Monthly activity
Recommended Tackle
- Rod
- Spinning or casting MH–H 7'6"–8'6", fast action
- Reel
- Spinning 3000–4000, or a large baitcaster
- Line
- PE #1.5–2.5 + fluoro leader 20–30 lb
- The strike hits with a huge jolt, so set your drag beforehand.
- A fast retrieve draws more strikes than a slow one.
Lure options

Minnows / Jerkbaits
Slender hardbaits that imitate swimming baitfish on a steady retrieve and dart on short twitches.

Lipless Crankbaits
Flat-sided hardbaits with a back line tie and a tight vibration, distinct from thin metal blade baits.

Jointed Swimbaits
Multi-jointed bodies swim with an articulated baitfish action; soft paddletails and glide baits have separate entries.

Glide Baits
Baitfish imitations built for side-to-side glides, often with one joint; this is not the same as a line-through softbait.

Walking Baits
Slim floating hardbaits worked with short twitches and slight slack to walk side to side.

Spoon-shaped lure
Curved metal flashes and wobbles on retrieve and fall; casting, trolling and vertical models work differently.

Metal Jigs
Solid metal lures for casting or vertical jigging; shape and weight distribution affect action and fall.
