R.08Weightless Rig

Weightless Rig

No weight at all, just a soft plastic on a hook (usually a dense stick worm or soft jerkbait). It sinks slowly and naturally under its own weight. In wacky rigging, the hook goes through the middle of the worm so both ends quiver as it sinks.

SETUP & PRESENTATION
Setup
Line → offset hook → nose-threaded softbait with a lightly protected point; no added weight. See Wacky for mid-body hooking.
Softbait options
Worms / Stickbaits / Paddletails / Grubs
01Use & Limits

Use and limits

When & Where

Shallow, clear water; fish near shallow cover during the spawning season; less active fish responding to a slow fall.

Limits and common errors

Deep water, strong wind (the bait is too light to control)

02Setup & Retrieve

Setup and retrieve

  1. Cast near the target and leave it alone; let it sink naturally and watch the line for a bite.
  2. Once it's on the bottom, lift the rod to let it sink again, or give it light shakes.
  3. Soft jerkbait: jerk and pause.

SIDE VIEW
  • With no weight, it sinks slowly and the material itself creates the action: a stick worm shimmies as it sinks, and a wacky-rigged worm flaps both ends like wings.
  • A soft jerkbait on an offset hook darts side to side just under the surface.
TypeNotes
TexposedOffset hook with the point buried; fairly snag resistant and can come through sparse cover.
WackyHooked through the middle, it has the strongest action on the fall; a weed guard can be added.
BTackle & Technique

Tackle and technique

Rod
ML–M, fast
Reel
Spinning 2500 (or a BFS baitcaster)
Line
PE #0.8 + fluoro 8–12 lb
    • The line keeps sinking slowly as the bait falls; if it suddenly speeds up, stops or moves sideways, that's a bite.
    • Fish easily tear wacky-rigged worms; slip on an O-ring first and hook through that.
    More application notes
    • Shallow, clear water
    • Spawning season, fish in the shallows or on the edges of cover
    • Inactive fish that respond to a slow fall
    • Deep water, strong wind (the bait is too light to control)
