Free Rig

Line slides through an eyed weight before the hook, allowing separation during the fall.

Watercolors and line drawings are illustrations; line lengths and proportions are not specifications.
SETUP & PRESENTATION
Setup
Thread line through the weight eye → tie an offset hook → rig the plastic; leave the weight free to slide.
Softbait options
Worms / Stickbaits / Paddletails / Grubs / Craws / Creature Baits
01Use & Limits

Use and limits

When & Where

Slope bases and grass edges where the bait can continue falling after the weight settles.

Limits and common errors

Separation depends on slack, angle and buoyancy; a fully free fall is not guaranteed.

02Setup & Retrieve

Setup and retrieve

  1. Check that the weight eye is smooth and line slides freely.
  2. Allow controlled slack after the cast and observe the descent.
  3. Pause after the weight settles, then lift lightly while watching the line.

SIDE VIEW
  • There's no fixed distance between weight and hook: the weight leads on the fall, and the plastic slowly “slides” down the line after it.
  • Lifting the rod raises the plastic, and when you let off it falls on its own again, giving repeated falls that trigger strikes.
  • Compared with a Texas rig, the plastic is separated from the weight and moves more freely; compared with a Carolina rig, it's simpler and better for hopping.
BTackle & Technique

Tackle and technique

Rod
M–MH, fast, 6'10"–7'2"
Reel
Spinning or baitcaster
Line
PE #0.8–1.2 + fluoro 10–14 lb, or straight fluoro
  1. Lift the rod (about 30–50 cm) to raise the plastic → let it drift down → reel up slack, and repeat.
  2. Drag it along the bottom and pause at cover.
  • An offset hook with the point buried makes it fairly snag resistant.
  • Choose plastics that move on the fall (curly tails, craws, creature baits with legs).
More application notes
  • Bottom, in open water or moderate cover
  • When fish respond to slowly falling baits
  • Sand or mud bottoms, gravel bottoms, weed edges
  • Thick weeds (switch to a pegged Texas rig)
