Swimbait

スイムベイト · Also called Jointed bait, Big bait

Large, highly realistic lures in shape and swimming action, including jointed hard baits, big soft swimbaits with built-in weight and hooks, and glide baits that slide side to side in an S pattern. They swim realistically even at slow speeds and target big fish.

BHow it works

How It Works

  • The jointed body swims in an S-shaped wiggle like a real fish, and the action changes smoothly with retrieve speed.
  • Glide baits have no lip; a light twitch of the rod or half to one turn of the handle makes them glide and turn widely left and right.
  • The big profile gives fish a long look, suiting a clear-water approach of letting fish get a good look at the bait.

Main Types

TypeNotes
Jointed hard bait2–4 sections; a slow steady retrieve gives an S-shaped swim.
Large soft swimbaitBuilt-in weight and hook, with a paddle or fish-shaped tail; smooth swimming action, and fish hold on longer.
Glide baitRhythmic rod twitches make it glide widely side to side; good for sight fishing and drawing fish out.
CRetrieve

Techniques

  1. Retrieve slowly and steadily, keeping the bait at the fish's eye level.
  2. Glide bait: 1/2–1 turn of the handle or a short rod twitch → pause, letting the bait complete one turn.

DWhen & Where

When & Where

● Good for

  • Clear reservoirs and lakes with plenty of big fish
  • Seasons when baitfish are larger
  • When you want to target big fish and are willing to trade away bites

○ Not ideal for

  • Waters dominated by small fish; when your tackle is too light (can't cast it or control fish)
ETackle

Recommended Tackle

Rod
H–XH, moderate-fast or fast, 7'0"–8'0"

FTarget & Tips

Target Species & Tips

  • Followers often turn away only at the bank, so make one more turn or pause right at your feet.
  • Use strong enough tackle; the shock of casting a big bait can break line and damage light gear.
